Creating a Comfortable, Respectful, and Positive Learning Environment

At Jefferson County Schools, we believe that students should feel comfortable and confident in what they wear while also maintaining a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment. Our dress code is designed to be relaxed and inclusive -- allowing for self-expression while maintaining a focus on learning.

What’s Allowed

Students may wear:

  • T-shirts, sweatshirts, and tops that fully cover the chest, midsection, and undergarments.

  • Jeans, shorts, skirts, joggers, leggings, or sweatpants that fit comfortably and are appropriate for school activities and meet coverage expectations (generally fingertip length or longer).

  • Athletic wear, including track pants, yoga pants, and jerseys (when not see-through or revealing).

  • Hats, caps, and hoods may be worn outdoors or in class at the teacher’s discretion.

  • Footwear of choice, including sneakers, sandals, or boots. (Closed-toe shoes may be required for specific activities like PE, labs, or workshops.)

Basic Expectations

To keep school a welcoming space for everyone, clothing must:

  • Cover undergarments, bottom, belly, and other private areas at all times (even when bending, stretching, or sitting)

  • Not include profanity, hate speech, sexually explicit content, or references to drugs, nicotine, alcohol, or weapons.

  • Not present a safety concern (such as excessively long chains, spiked accessories, or clothing that drags on the ground).

  • Allow full participation in school activities and not disrupt the school day.

If There’s Ever a Concern…

Students will be spoken to respectfully and privately. We’ll always aim to address dress code concerns with kindness, offering options such as calling home, changing into something available on campus, or simply adjusting what’s being worn. Our goal is never to embarrass, but to support.
