A Letter from Superintendent Pons

It takes a whole community to keep our children safe.

Beginning Monday, August 11th, Jefferson County Schools will launch a new school year. Safety remains our top priority—not just physical safety, but also emotional well-being, where students feel secure, supported, and connected to their teachers and school.

As we prepare for the year ahead, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that school safety is a shared responsibility. It starts at our bus stops, where students wait to be picked up, and continues through the increased traffic as parents drop off their children and head to work. I encourage everyone to slow down, take a little extra time, and remain mindful—we’re protecting our most valuable resource: our children.

Each of us also contributes by staying alert and aware. If you see something concerning, please report it to the appropriate individuals. Your vigilance makes a difference.

In Jefferson County, we are especially fortunate to have the strong partnership of Sheriff McNeill, who continues to demonstrate exceptional commitment to student safety. This year, three school resource officers will serve our campuses—two on the main campus and one on the TP campus. In my 33 years in education, I’ve never seen a sheriff more dedicated to protecting our students. These officers are here not just for safety, but to support and encourage student success. We invite our students to get to know them—they are part of our support team.

We also ask our parents and community members to stay in communication with school principals or the Superintendent if any safety concerns arise. Open, proactive communication helps us all do better.

Please note that new legislation—House Bill 1105—now limits cellphone usage during the school day. For elementary and middle school students, phones are prohibited throughout the day. In high school, phone use is not allowed during instructional time.

Finally, I invite all of you to join us this Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Jefferson County main campus for our Back-to-School Open House. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, every classroom has a sponsor and will be fully stocked with supplies. Every student will receive a backpack, and we’ll have free food, haircuts, hair braiding, and a variety of local resources available. You’ll also get the chance to meet our teachers, principals, and your Superintendent.

Let’s come together to ensure a safe, successful, and inspiring school year for every student.

BELIEVE IN JEFFERSON!
